Is it past the grace period?
Only when the days overdue are more than the grace period. Until then, nothing is charged.

Is the invoice big enough?
If you've set a minimum invoice amount, smaller invoices are skipped.

Work out one charge
A flat amount, or the percentage of the rent invoice total (not of the unpaid balance).

Apply the cap
If there's a maximum fee, each charge is capped at it, then rounded to the cent.

Once, or every day
Flat and percentage fees are charged once. Daily fees are charged for each day after the grace period, up to max days to charge.

How do you calculate a late fee on rent?
Count the days since the due date. If that's more than the grace period, apply the fee: a flat amount, or a percentage of the rent invoice. With a daily fee, repeat it for each day after the grace period, up to any limit on days. If there's a maximum fee, cap each charge at it.
What is a grace period?
The number of days after the due date before a late fee applies. With a 5-day grace period, rent due on the 1st can be paid up to the 6th without a fee. The fee applies from the 7th, when the invoice is 6 days overdue.
Is a percentage late fee based on the rent or the unpaid balance?
In PropHaven, it's a percentage of the rent invoice's total, not what's left unpaid. This calculator works the same way.
Does the maximum fee cap the total or each charge?
Each charge. For a daily fee, the cap limits each day's charge. To limit the total, use max days to charge.
